I haven’t read any other Holly Smale books, but I really liked this one. Sequel to Geek Girl, it was a very enjoyable read, with everything an eleven plus year old girl would love.
Geek girl Harriet Manners knows a lot of facts. For instance, humans have 70,000 thoughts a day. She is also a model, but that doesn’t stop her from being a victim of bullying. After the last term of lessons, life changes. Harriet’s newly-found modelling career takes her on a whirlwind tour to Tokyo, but none of her precious facts help. In the new world she finds herself in, she has to think on her feet about snap decisions, like how to stay in the good books of her fierce boss. She also knows nothing about boys, which would have helped her in numerous situations she found herself in.
Girls will connect with Harriet, because she has the same worries and insecurities as them.
The only downside to this book is that it is necessary to read the first book of the series, because some of the back story, for example her family set up, was missed in the second book, and it would have helped to know this, purely because you don’t have to keep re-reading the same piece of text trying to understand it!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and would definitely recommend it to a girl between 11 and 14.
