‘I have a dream’ were the words Martin Luther King used when he made his most inspiring speech for black people’s rights and it is at the heart of Polka’s play.
The play introduces a new angle on King’s effect on people, not just the whole of the world but also on his kids and family. It is set around the very different but very connected lives of Yolanda who is Martin’s daughter, and Raheem who is a typical 2011 ten-year-old boy.
As far as Raheem is concerned, his mother goes on and on about King which he finds totally boring. On the other hand, Yolanda lives in 1963 USA. and wishes her father would just stay at home with her sometimes.
When a very boring book makes Raheem fall asleep he finds himself back in time inside Yolanda’s bedroom and life will never be the same again. They teach each other to understand the different views on the situation and begin to help each on their journeys. ‘I Have a Dream…’ is played by two actors who swop between four characters throughout the show. The play is a great way to educate kids on black people’s rights and a fun way for them to get interested in history.
It is a brilliant way to learn something new in a highly entertaining way. Children are sure to enjoy the play and learn a lot at the same time.
The show encourages children to think about their own dreams and goals for their future.
